First Communion Preparation
“I also recommend that, in their catechetical training, and especially in their preparation for First Holy Communion, children be taught the meaning and the beauty of spending time with Jesus, and helped to cultivate a sense of awe before his presence in the Eucharist.”
(Apostolic Exhortation), <<Sacramentum Caritatis>> n. 67)
The gift of the Eucharist is the most important Sacrament we participate in as Catholics. Christ gives us his Body and Blood truly present in the consecrated bread and wine in mass. Through this program, we help the children understand that they are truly receiving Jesus Christ, in the Sacrament of the Eucharist. To prepare to receive the Eucharist for the first time, a child must be enrolled and participate in the Religious Education program for 1 year prior to their 1st Communion year, receive their First Reconciliation, and attend all classes. Meaning; children must be enrolled in regular Religious Education Program while in 1st Grade as their first year of communion, and be at least in 2nd grade to receive the Holy Communion.
Expectations of the family
Preparing to receive Jesus in the Eucharist is a very special time for the child and his or her family. 1st Communion is more than a “Catholic check mark”; it is a great grace to receive the God into our bodies. The family must play a very important role in the preparation for 1st Holy Communion. Ideally the best preparation for the Eucharist is taking your child to mass every Sunday, and helping your child to understand what it is all about. Pray with your child daily as a family, perhaps at bedtime. It is particularly good to encourage children to talk to God and to Jesus in their own language talking as they would do as a friend. As a parent it is worthwhile asking about the program and find out how you can help your child.
